How It’s Made: From Traditional Soapmaking to Bright Berry Soap

Soap has always been one of life’s simple essentials.

Long before colourful moulds, delicate fragrances and fruit-shaped designs, soapmaking was a practical craft. Early soapmakers worked with oils or fats, water, heat and an alkali, carefully guiding a chemical process called saponification. It took knowledge, patience and experience to turn simple ingredients into something useful.

For most of its history, soap was made for one reason: to clean.

But over time, people began to imagine more.

Soap did not have to be only plain or practical. It could feel refined. It could smell beautiful. It could look beautiful. It could become part of the small rituals that make everyday life feel a little more considered.

When Soap Became Beautiful

One of the important turning points came with transparent soap. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, London soapmaker Andrew Pears became known for creating a refined, amber-coloured transparent soap that helped show how an everyday object could also feel elegant.

That idea still inspires us.

Soap can be useful, of course. But it can also be a little surprising. A little joyful. A little beautiful.

It can sit beside the sink like a small object of design. It can make a guest bathroom feel more welcoming. It can turn an ordinary handwashing moment into something with colour, fragrance and personality.

The Creative Possibility of Melt & Pour Soap

Traditional soapmaking begins with raw oils and alkali. Melt & pour soap begins one step later, with a carefully prepared soap base that has already gone through the essential soapmaking process.

That prepared base gives us the freedom to focus on design.

We gently melt the soap base, add colour and fragrance, then pour it into moulds. Once the soap cools and sets, we can build, layer, finish and refine each piece.

This process allows soap to become much more than a simple bar.

It can become a strawberry, a bunch of grapes, a slice of citrus, a playful shape for children or a refined piece for a beautiful bathroom. It can be bright, elegant, nostalgic, bold or whimsical.
